Dear Dentist...

Dear Dentist,
I feel like I have something stuck in between my teeth, I try to pick it with toothpick and I can’t seem to get it out. Must I really go see the dentist for that or would it disappear with time?
Bruce.

Dear Bruce,
Use of a toothpick is actually not recommended because most people tend to damage their gums using it. It could be a sign that you need to get professional cleaning or could be a sign of something much more serious it’s advised that you go to the dentist who might need to take some radiographs and examine to determine its cause.

Dear Dentist,
When I brush, my Gum bleeds, please why is that and what can I do to stop it?
Enny.

Hello Enny
Bleeding gums is a sign of gum disease and this common in a lot of people. There is tartar that is irritating to your gums which a regular toothbrush won’t clean. Please have your dentist or dental hygienist do a cleaning.

Dear Dentist,
I think my wisdom tooth is growing because I always feel pain at the back of my mouth. Should I be worried?
Jane

Dear Jane
Depending on your age it might be growing or might be stuck in the bone. If you are not in your early 20s then its probably stuck. Have a dentist check it out. If it needs to be taken out then it’s better done now than later. This will relieve pain and prevent future problems

Dear Dentist,
My teeth are close together, I don’t succeed much when I try to use toothpick to take out food particles stuck in between them, what do I do?

Anonymous

Dear Anonymous
Crowded teeth are best treated by the orthodontist; these are dentists who use braces to straighten out your teeth. Also you need to use dental floss to clean between your teeth.

Do send your dental questions to dentist@erinmagazine.org Please be rest assured that emails sent to the dentist are strictly confidential- your details will not be published.

Dear Dentist,

I have got spaces in between my upper front teeth, Most of my family and friends find it attractive, but I do not like it. Is there any way I can reverse it?

Hello,
Spacing with your upper teeth can be closed by going to the orthodontist (braces dentist) they will put wires and brackets which will help close the space. You can also close the space with crowns or veneers.

Dear Dentist,
Firstly, I must commend you are beautiful and I think your column in èrín very helpful, I like it very much. Secondly, my wife extracted her tooth about a month ago in a general hospital, and I want to know if there are any side effects to extractions or fillings. Thank you.
Bimbo.

Hi Bimbo,
nice to hear from you and thank you for your compliments. There are usually no side effects when fillings or extractions are done.If your wife is experiencing symptoms she should go back to GH and let them take a look at the extraction site for any infections etc.

cheers

Dear Dentist,
I noticed that whenever I brush my teeth there is little blood in the foam I spit out.Is this dangerous or should I not worry about it?
Thanks,
Esther

Dear Esther,
Bleeding from your gums is a sign that your gums are a bit irritated.I am not sure how much bleeding you have and what kind of toothbrush you use. I would recommend that you use a soft toothbrush and also go to your dentist for a professional cleaning. Usually when we dont brush with the right technique we tend to leave a bit of plaque behind which over time gets hard and cant be removed with the regular toothbrush so a 6 monthly visit t the dentist would definitely be my recommendation.

Please send your dental questions to dentist@erinmagazine.org

Dear Dentist,
Please why does my tooth ache?
Yinka

Dear Yinka,
Toothache is usually a sign of an underlying problem. Many times, the body is able to repair itself, including the tissues found in the oral cavity, but when the injury occurs faster than the rate of repair, then warning signs like toothache, bleeding and swelling may occur.
Toothache may occur with cavities, cracks in teeth, gum disease, abscess in a tooth and so on. To best treat it, please go to your local dentist to check the underlying issue.

Dear Dentist,
Why is a tooth in a particular colour?
Betty

Dear Betty,
The colour of teeth is from the underlying dentine, which is covered by the enamel that is seen in the mouth.
Sometimes staining will occur and this changes the colour of teeth. Staining may be from the inside of a tooth or from the outside. Internal staining may be from medication taken when younger when teeth were developing (e.g., tetracycline will give a dark grey internal stain). Internal staining may also occur with cavities and teeth needing root canal treatment.
External staining is easier to treat and may be caused by constant exposure of the teeth to sources of discolouration. Examples of these include coffee, tea, tobacco and (red) wine. Please discuss with your dentist about various whitening methods if the colour of your teeth bothers you.

Dear Dentist,
What can be done if a tooth broke accidentally?
David

Dear David,
Depending on the amount of tooth missing, the tooth may be able to be fixed with a filling or a crown. If it’s a really large portion of the tooth, it may need root canal therapy and then a crown afterwards.

Dear Dentist,
What is the major cause of mouth odour?
Anonymous

Dear Anonymous,
Mouth odour has many causes. It may be caused by untreated cavities, built up plaque and calculus, or abscess in the mouth. Mouth odour may also occur with a cold or with a sore throat or other respiratory tract infections.

Dear Dentist,
What material is used for tooth filling?
Joke

Dear Joke,
There are different types of filling materials. Amalgam is grey coloured and is one of the oldest known materials still being widely used till this day. It is made from a blend of alloys. There are also tooth-coloured materials like composite and glass ionomer cement.

Dear Dentist,
What are the causes of swollen gums?
Damilare

Dear Damilare,
Swollen gums are usually a sign of infection. The infection may be from either the teeth or gums. Treatment will depend on cause, so please visit your dentist for further treatment.

Dear Dentist,
What can be used to make homemade teeth whitener without adding any chemical constituent?
Sisi Eko

Dear Sisi Eko,
I do not really recommend making homemade teeth whiteners. There are some who recommend mixing baking soda and lemon juice, but there may be problems with the teeth wearing off because of the acidity of the mix.
